What do bottles of wine, designer goods, and government instruments have in common? All have been subjected to counterfeiting. This is a problem Applied DNA Sciences, based in Stony Brook, N.Y., has developed new technology to combat. Their technology embeds botanical DNA into products for purposes of authentication. Under a certain light the DNA is detectable and it isn’t able to be copied.
The company markets five different products including SigNature® DNA, which involves creating custom DNA sequences that can be embedded into a variety of carriers such as ink, varnish, thread laminates, and metal coatings to allow authentication in the supply chain. SmartDNA® can be used in devices to tag a person fleeing from a crime with a DNA spray allowing a better ability to identify and convict. Their FiberTyping product is a DNA test that can determine whether a cotton product contains premium cottons assuring quality in cotton products. Cashield acts both as a deterrent, the degradation dye will indelibly mark stolen cash rendering it useless. It also acts facilitates convicting suspects as possession of the marked cash can be used as evidence. Finally, the company has a digitalDNA product that allows accurate tracking and authentication of products throughout the supply chain.

The company is headed by Dr. James A. Hayward, Chairman, President, and CEO. He received his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from SUNY Oneonta in 1976 and his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from SUNY Stony Brook in 1983 where he also received an honorary Doctor of Science in 2000. He has over 20 years of experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, life science, and consumer product industries. He has also served on the boards of many companies including the Stony Brook Foundation, the Association, the Long Island Life Sciences Initiative, and the Ward Melville Heritage Foundation.
